Race to the South Pole. In 1911, Captain Robert Falcon Scott & Captain Roald Amundsen set off from their respective base camps on the #Antarctic coast, each trying to be the first #expedition to reach the #geographic South Pole. Roald Amundsen and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911 and when Scott arrived there on 17 January 1911, they found the black flags that had been left there by Amundsen and his team, and realised that they had lost the race. @redearthgeo #geography #history #adventure #map
